The Cobb front mount intercooler moves charge air cooling from the factory top mount location — where the factory TMIC sits directly in the engine bay heat zone — to the front bumper opening, where ambient airflow provides consistent, efficient cooling. The fundamental physics here are straightforward: a cooler charge air charge is a denser charge, providing more oxygen per unit volume to the combustion process, and a denser charge allows the ECU to target higher boost and more aggressive ignition timing without exceeding safe operating temperatures. The NexGen FMIC core uses a bar-and-plate construction designed for maximum cooling efficiency in the limited space of the Subaru front bumper opening. The bar-and-plate design provides more fin surface area per unit volume than tube-and-fin construction, making it more efficient at a given core size.

The Cobb FMIC system includes the complete pipe kit needed to connect the intercooler core to the turbocharger outlet and the intake manifold. The NexGen FMIC is designed to work as part of the Cobb NexGen Stage 2 system, with the Accessport Stage 2 OTS maps calibrated for the FMIC’s cooling capacity and the accompanying NexGen SF intake and boost control solenoid.
