The fuel pump’s job is to deliver sufficient fuel volume at the required pressure to keep up with injector demand under all operating conditions. At high power levels on E85 or high ethanol blends, the fuel pump faces significantly higher demand than on gasoline — ethanol requires approximately 30-40% more fuel volume than gasoline to make equivalent power because of its lower energy density. A high-flow fuel pump ensures the fuel system can supply adequate fuel volume to keep up with injector demand even at the highest boost levels and fuel flow rates, preventing the fuel pressure drop that causes lean conditions under sustained high-power use.
