How Flex Fuel Works on Subaru

Stage 2+ NexGen Flex Fuel for the 2011-2014 STI combines front-mount intercooler charge cooling with dynamic ethanol calibration for the GR-generation EJ257. The NexGen FMIC at the front bumper dramatically reduces charge air temperatures versus the factory TMIC. The CAN Flex Fuel sensor measures ethanol content in real time and the Accessport adjusts calibration automatically. On E30 through the NexGen Stage 2 hardware, the Stage 2+ OTS maps target boost and timing levels significantly above the 93-octane Stage 2 configuration.

CAN System, OTS Maps, and Ethanol Blends

The Stage 2+ CAN Flex Fuel OTS maps for the GR STI EJ257 are calibrated for the complete NexGen hardware configuration with flex fuel — accounting for the FMIC’s cooling capacity, the intake airflow, the solenoid’s precision, and the ethanol sensor input together. The combination of FMIC charge cooling and ethanol’s knock resistance allows significantly more aggressive calibration targets than either provides alone.
